Buried Alive: Baby Survives Hours In Woods

Francis Crowley

"I was just stunned".

Jessop says he followed his gut, but prepared for the worst.

The baby drank a whole bottle of Pedialyte in under a minute, then drank two more, said Missoula County Sheriff's Capt. Bill Burt.

Law enforcement officials said finding the baby alive, despite the conditions and cold temperature, was a miracle.

This July 8 booking photo provided by the Missoula County Jail shows suspect Francis Crowley, who was being held on $50,000 bail on a charge of criminal endangerment.

The child had been in the care of Francis Carlton Crowley, 32, on Saturday, according to the sheriff's office statement.

Crowley told officers that he left the baby behind because he was "too heavy", NBC reports.

During the court appearance, Crowley broke down in tears exclaiming, "I love that f*cking kid", as he asked the judge to not take the boy away.

Crowley returned to the hot springs and was apprehended by police, the statement said.

"Due to the urgency of this matter, members of the Missoula County Search and Rescue were paged out to assist officers from the United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Montana Highway Patrol, and Missoula County deputies" searched tirelessly for the infant, according to a Missoula County Sheriff's Office statement.

He has a string of prior arrests that include burglary, assault, drug and criminal mischief charges, Deputy County Attorney Brittany Williams said.

Crowley appeared and told the officers that he would direct them to the baby's location.

Crowley later admitted to having taken both methamphetamine and bath salts, according to court documents.

Crowley left the area before deputies arrived, but they learned that the baby who was supposed to be with him hadn't been seen for hours. Crowley was then placed in the back of another deputy's squad auto so he could direct them on where to search, and he kept repeating that he had crashed into a mountainside, Jessop said. He called for a four-wheel drive vehicle and he and Scholz found the wreck beyond the road's end. Further down slope, they found a container of baby formula and a piece of clothing in the bushes.

Crowley has a criminal record out of OR that includes convictions of burglary and eluding police, CBS affiliate KPAX reported.

The baby was transported to the hospital and treated for dehydration, lack of food and scratches, cuts and bruises he sustained after spending approximately nine hours alone in the wilderness.

Jessop carried the baby along a 20-minute walk to safety, and the child coughed up a few sticks along the way, Jessop said. He was placed into the custody for child protective services, according to the AP.

Jessop, who has three daughters, said his paternal instincts kicked in when he saw the child. Deputies detained the man, at which point he explained that there was a baby buried somewhere in the woods.
