British PM May urges her party to back EU Brexit plan: Spokesman

People think David Davis secretly wrote'It's coming home in his resignation letter

British Prime Minister Theresa May met with her shaken-up Cabinet on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ Time) as she tried to restore government unity after the resignations of two top ministers over Brexit.

Mr. Johnson's dramatic resignation on Monday just hours after Brexit Minister David Davis quit late on Sunday sent reverberations through Westminster - and beyond.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the Chequers agreement was created to be a "credible offer" to Brussels to allow negotiations to make progress.

May replaced Johnson with a loyalist, former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, and gave Davis' job to Dominic Raab in a bid to shore up her authority.

Gove told British television station ITV he was "absolutely not" planning to resign.

Asked whether May was in trouble following the rash of departures from her government on Monday, he replied: "No". "I believe this will help the government stick to the promises it made", the MP told the Sun. "I hope you have a lovely day".

After the cabinet meeting, Mrs May tweeted that she was "looking ahead to a busy week". "And sending our best wishes to @England for tomorrow!"

Among Tory Brexiteers there was deepening anger at the proposals agreed at Friday's meeting of the Cabinet at Chequers which they branded "Brexit in name only".

Bernard Jenkin said the European Research Group - led by influential Eurosceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg - did not expect more resignations and backed Mrs May's leadership.

With the dozens of Conservative Brexiteers potentially ready to reject a deal with Brussels based on Mrs May's plans, moderate figures in the party have appealed for support to the scores of Labour MPs who have previously rebelled against Mr Corbyn to vote in favour of a soft Brexit.

Former leader Lord Howard said a bid to oust Mrs May would be "extremely foolish and extremely ill-advised".

"There is a whole range of scenarios in which they get no Brexit, or an indefinitely delayed Brexit, or a change of government or a second referendum".

Solicitor General Robert Buckland said: "She talked about Corbyn, she talked about the alternative which is delivering the country to the sort of government that I don't think people have voted for and certainly any Conservative voter would be repelled by".

Mr Buckland added that there had been a realisation that "we all hang together or we all hang separately".

Two years after Britain voted 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the European Union, May is trying to find a middle way between two starkly differing views - within her party and the country - of the UK's relationship with Europe.

"Because I've already cleared the existing text with Mrs Merkel". "That dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

"By October we would like to have a conclusion and reach a good agreement", said Roth, who was speaking at a summit in London.

Speaking at the Institute of global and European Affairs in Dublin, Minister Coveney said there had not been a clear British negotiating position for many months.

He has also criticised Downing Street for briefing Labour MPs about its Brexit plans, describing such a development as "a matter of grave concern". "I have North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, I have the United Kingdom which is in somewhat turmoil, and I have Putin", he said.

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary David Gauke warned Tory Eurosceptics that a "no deal" Brexit was "not an attractive option at all".

"It may resolve the dilemma the prime minister faces".

Donald Trump arrives in Britain on Thursday for his first visit as USA president, flying into a whirlwind of protests against him and political turmoil over Brexit.
