De Blasio's spokesman said the security detail had the direct approval and was under the supervision of the Border Patrol supervisor.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has alleged New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D.) illegally crossed the United States' border with Mexico.

The mayor today called the allegation "absolutely ridiculous".

Any claim of illegality or wrongdoing on de Blasio's part is a "flat out lie" and that this letter is an "obvious attempt by someone to attack the mayor because of his advocacy for families being ripped apart at the border by the Trump Administration", Phillips added.

More than 2,300 families were separated as a result of the administration's zero-tolerance policy, which criminally prosecutes anyone caught crossing illegally. He was visiting the Texas border with about 20 other mayors from around the USA who said the president had failed to properly address the situation at the border. However, CBP alleges de Blasio's group left and went back into Mexico. He then went to Mexico to get a better view of the facility. The group allegedly included de Blasio and members of the New York Police Department.

A New York Police Department inspector with the group answered "no" and indicated that they had arrived from Mexico, according to the letter.

The official then reportedly informed the group they had crossed the border illegally.

De Blasio said the agents checked with their supervisor before allowing the officials' cars to exit and return via normal checkpoint.

Spokesman Eric Phillips rejected the claim that Mr de Blasio violated Mexican and U.S. immigration laws.

He said both times they showed their passports and crossed with approval of agents at the entry point.

After being denied access NY mayor Bill De Blasio looks through a chain linked fence outside of the children's tent encampment built to deal with the Trump administrations "zero tolerance" policy in Tornillo, Texas, on June 21, 2018.

The government had been bound by court order to reunite children aged five and under by 10 July, but U.S. officials say that "legitimate, logistical impediments" are delaying reunions for numerous 102 children under five years old.

KVUE has reached out to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for a statement.
