'The English Patient' wins Golden Man Booker

Booker Prize-winner author Julian Barnes suggested all great works of literature should come with 'trigger warnings'

To mark the big anniversary, the Booker Prize Foundation created a special Golden Man Booker Prize to reward the greatest book to ever win the award.

The novel won the 1992 Booker Prize and the 1992 Governor General's Award.

The 1970s finalist was "In a Free State" by Trinidad-born V.S. Naipaul, while "Moon Tiger" by British writer Penelope Lively was the 1980s choice.

Speaking at the close of the Man Booker 50 festival in the Southbank Centre, London, on Sunday, Ondaatje said he had not reread The English Patient, which moves between a nurse tending a horribly burned man in an Italian villa at the end of the second world war and a tragic love affair from his past, since 1992.

The Sri Lanka-born writer was announced as the victor at the closing event of the Man Booker 50 Festival at the Royal Festival Hall, which saw Shamsie discuss why she had chosen The English Patient and an extract performed by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Four dumped from Love Island after public vote and dramatic recoupling
When Georgia calls Jack over to clarify what happened, he says: "Unintentionally, we kissed on the lips". Where do you possibly begin with her? They [ITV] do have a duty of care, they handle that quite well.

At Golden Man Booker Live, judge Kamila Shamsie discussed why she had chosen The English Patient as her victor of the 1990s, before an extract of the book was performed by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Michael Ondaatje was presented with his golden trophy.

Born in 1943 in Sri Lanka when it was known as Ceylon, Mr. Ondaatje now lives in Canada. The judges then winnowed their selections down to the top five, which were voted on by the public. He paid tribute to the late "The English Patient" film director, Anthony Minghella, "who I suspect had something to do with the result of this vote". "The English Patient" was selected by the novelist Kamila Shamsie to represent the 1990s.

Shamsie said: "The English Patientis that rare novel which gets under your skin and insists you return to it time and again, always yielding a new surprise or delight".

The other judges of the Golden Man Booker were writer and editor Robert McCrum, poet Lemn Sissay, broadcaster Simon Mayo and poet Hollie McNish.
