Ryanair announces cancelled flights as summer strike onslaught begins

Getty Images Ryanair strikes Ryanair has called on Irish trade union Forsa to cancel the Irish pilots strike

It said it did its utmost to avoid the industrial action over pilots" demand for a "seniority list' to decide who gets holidays, promotions and transfers.

But Ryanair says this only represents 27% of its workforce in the Republic of Ireland. However, no planned strike in Ryanair's 33 year history has ever gone ahead, so there is hope for Tomorrowland visitors planning on travelling those days that all will be okay.

Some flights between Ireland and the United Kingdom are set to be affected.

"We will do this by cancelling a number of flights on high frequency routes from Ireland to London and other United Kingdom destinations where customers can transfer readily to other flights on Thursday or switch their travel to earlier flights tomorrow (Wednesday) or later on Friday, Saturday or subsequent days".

Ryanair has announced it will cancel up to 30 Irish flights this Thursday, during a strike by pilots.

It said it would also help customers travelling to the United Kingdom with alternative flights and ferries.

Ryanair management and the pilots' union Fórsa will meet later today in a last ditch bid to avert tomorrow's 24-hour strike affecting an estimated 5,700 passengers.

Visitors to Tomorrowland's second weekend (27th -29th July) may face travel concerns following the announcement of planned strikes from Ryanair staff.

The airline says only some services between Ireland and the United Kingdom will be affected, while all Ireland to Europe flights will operate as normal.

"It is unacceptable that competitor airline pilots are actively organising strikes by Ryanair's pilots when these airlines will be the direct beneficiaries of any such disruption".

"These coordinated strike threats are created to cause unnecessary disruption to customers and damage Ryanair's low fare model, for the benefit of high fare competitor airlines in Ireland and Germany", it said.
