Roger Federer Exits Wimbledon After a Nail-Biting Match Against Kevin Anderson

Roger Federer walks onto court

Anderson was sticking to his guns, though, and after saving match point the eighth seed secured another break of the Federer serve and snatched a set back.

LONDON: Roger Federer suffered a stunning Wimbledon exit as the defending champion blew a two-set lead and wasted a match point in a 2-6, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 quarter-final defeat against South Africa´s Kevin Anderson on Wednesday. 'Against Anderson he has won all four matches and never dropped a set, so I expect him to comfortably get through.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be moving towards his fifth successive Wimbledon semi-final after taking the opening two sets.

Federer, aiming for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon title, settled for a tie-break which he took 7-5 - his 300th set overall at the Championships.

Asked yesterday if he had concerns about noise from the Centre Court crowd, Federer light-heartedly replied: "I'm more concerned the World Cup final will have issues because the Wimbledon final is going on".

The women's semi-finals are set for Thursday.

Neither man looked like faltering until Federer double-faulted for the first time in the match and just the fourth time in the tournament in the 23rd game before Anderson held his nerve to snatch a remarkable victory in four hours and 14 minutes.

Gareth Southgate says England face toughest World Cup test against Croatia
The center-back will be key to limiting England's threat from set pieces and will be a useful weapon in the opposition box, too. Croatia topped a tough group, winning all three games.

"I just kept on telling myself I have to continue believing". You need that mindset against Roger.

After a slump following two years of nearly total domination of the men's game, Djokovic's star appears to be back on the rise and he is a clear contender to win a fourth Wimbledon title.

"The umpire said he didn't see".

"Do you think I ruined the court?" he bellowed at Ramos.

"He said he thinks it damaged the court". Nishikori did the same in the fourth set and he didn't get a warning.

That will be played at Centre Court, of course, a spot Federer knows well. I've played Gael a few times, this was the first time I was able to beat him. "I'm pleased I'll be staying there right now".
