More misery for Theresa May as Australia vows to stick by UK

Can the turmoil keep sterling down?

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May emerges from 10 Downing Street in Westminster, London, Britain on July 9, 2018.

Margaret Thatcher initially supported the 1975 referendum on the U.K.'s European Union membership, but a string of firings and resignations of cabinet members (sound familiar?) who favored more integration against her wishes led to her downfall.

Johnson followed Brexit Secretary David Davis out the door as a hard-won government consensus on future trade ties with the bloc disintegrated less than three days after it was forged, and nine months before Britain is due to leave the EU.

Britain on Wednesday geared up for the arrival of Donald Trump just hours after the US president waded into the Brexit crisis gripping Prime Minister Theresa May's government and portrayed the closest USA ally in Europe as a country in turmoil.

There are already fears of tensions, after he publicly clashed with Mrs May over criticism of crime levels in London, the performance of the NHS, and retweeting posts from a far-right group.

He also heaped praise on his "friend" Boris Johnson - who dramatically resigned from government yesterday over Brexit - and suggested he could meet him during the trip. "Very supportive. I maybe will speak to him when I get over there". I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship.

Responding to the news of Mr Davis' resignation, GSD Leader Keith Azopardi took to Twitter where he wrote: "The resignation of David Davis as Brexit Secretary marks the start of a long hot summer of uncertainty in negotiations to leave the Union". But, after much speculation, Mr Johnson announced he would not enter the Conservative leadership race when his ally Michael Gove announced he was running.

Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 15 percent of Conservative lawmakers - now 48 - write a letter requesting one. "It is the last thing we need".

Speaking to James Whale on talkRADIO, he said: "Frankly, what came out of Chequers was a complete betrayal not just in the way people voted in the referendum but how they voted in the general election".

Worldwide trade secretary Liam Fox was seen to shake his head and mouth the word "no" when reporters asked him on his way out of cabinet whether he was about to quit.

"And it would be a split coming from the top, not from the members of the Conservative Party across the country".

She looks set on facing down hardline Brexit supporters in her Conservative Party who are livid over her plans to negotiate a "free trade area for goods" with the EU.

Earlier she said she had chaired a "productive" meeting of her reshaped cabinet ahead of the publication later this week of a full policy document on Brexit. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world. Davis and Johnson initially backed the plan, before deciding they could not support it.

Lord Hague said the proposals agreed at Chequers were "the most that can be achieved within the inevitable and inescapable constraints".
