Israel plans first lunar space mission in December

The prototype SpaceIL vehicle is unveiled at the President’s Residence

"We will all remember where we were when Israel landed on the moon", Morris Kahn, one of the project's leaders, said announcing the mission.

A Falcon 9 rocket built by SpaceX will carry the craft to the moon from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on February 13, 2019.

SpaceIL was founded in 2011 by three engineers: Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari, and Yonatan Winetraub.

Josef Weiss, IAI CEO said, "As one who has personally brought the collaboration with SpaceIL to IAI, I regard the launch of the first Israeli spacecraft to the moon as an example of the unbelievable capabilities one can reach in civilian-space activity". Kahn, a businessman and philanthropist, took it upon himself to lead this project and bring it to its completion, and regards it as his personal mission. Over the years, additional partners from the private sector, from government companies and from the academia have joined as well.

But she famously clashed with Senator Dianne Feinstein during her confirmation hearing past year to be an appeals court judge. A Democrat in a state which voted overwhelmingly for Trump two years ago, Donnelly is up for re-election this year.

The research, conducted in cooperation with scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, will use a magnetometer on the spacecraft to attempt to understand how the rocks on the moon received their magnetism. Construction of the spacecraft began two years later in facilities provided by Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd.

The dainty spacecraft is just about 5 feet (1.5 meters) high and weighs 1,322 pounds (600 kilograms). Its maximum speed will reach more than 10 km per second (36,000 kilometers, or almost 22,370 miles, per hour). Israel hopes to be the fourth when it launches a spacecraft this December with an assist from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Its first task however will be to plant an Israeli flag on the moon, organisers said. The data will be transmitted to the IAI control room during the two days following the landing. The prize would have given $30 million to the team that developed a low-priced method of robotic space exploration. SpaceIL participated in the Google Lunar XPrize competition, which wrapped up earlier this year with no ultimate victor. In May, China launched a relay satellite that will orbit the moon and allow it to receive signals from a planned probe that will land on the far side of the moon. Concurrently, the non-profit is continuing its efforts to raise the funds necessary to complete this mission.

Israel isn't the only nation setting its sights on the moon. In recent years, SpaceIL has ignited the imagination of about 900,000 children nationwide, with the help of a broad network of volunteers.
