Irish Open: Winning putt is dream come true says champion Russell Knox

Russell Knox celebrates holing the winning putt on the 18th hole

Russell Knox gave proponents of putting by feel a huge boost by knocking in a couple of 40-foot bombs to win the $7 million Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

It was a wonderful conclusion to a tournament that was hugely successful.

He almost managed it - a booming drive and delicate approach left Fox needing to hole an eight-footer to win his first title on the European Tour, but past the right edge it skimmed, leaving Fox stunned, and giving Knox a second chance as the pair returned to the 18th hole for a playoff.

The New Zealander had that putt for the title but missed on the high side and the pair were left to go back up the last.

However, a second monstrous putt from Knox put the pressure back on Fox to hole out to get it to a second playoff hole.

It also offers some redemption on Irish soil after the 33-year-old finished second to Rory McIlroy at this event in 2016.

"I hit two great putts on 18 which grazed the edge and one came back at me", said Fox.

Southampton Close In On Leeds United Target Angus Gunn
Gunn will leave Manchester City with Ederson, Claudio Bravo, Daniel Grimshaw as the remaining first-team goalkeepers for the blue side of Manchester.

"I had the apple in my hand... and I just saw someone at the last minute", said Knox. "This is a heck of a start but I feel I have more to go".

"For me to have made it twice in a row.I'm very lucky".

"But I was able to hit a good shot and get on the green, which I was thrilled with".

The duo finished a stroke ahead of Spain's Jorge Campillo, who fired a course-record equalling 65 as defending champion Jon Rahm hit an eventful 66 to share fourth with overnight leader South African Erik van Rooyen.

"I mean, obviously, to make a putt like that, it's a dream come true, on the last hole to win", said Knox. A bogey followed on the next but a 20-footer on the 12th had him in the leading group at 12 under. I had a great feeling on the greens. The leading four players not already exempt from the top-12 finishers qualified.

Knox now has two weeks on home soil with not only the goal of a first Scottish Open triumph but matching Paul Lawrie's feat of becoming the second Scot in three Carnoustie Open's to lift the Claret Jug. I read the putt and I was like, 'Just don't aim.
