The year started with us learning about Google's plan to rebrand all payment services into one and called it Google Play.

Google announced that Google Pay and Google Pay Send will merge.

But EU regulators are not satisfied with the present policies and may fine Google in billions, according to a report from Washington Post. This particular feature will only work in the United States.

Going forward, Google Pay will allow users to pay to or request money from a friend via peer-to-peer.

Next, support for storing event tickets and boarding passes within the app.

When Google pushed out the big rebranding of Android Pay to Google Pay back in February, they told us to expect even more features outside of its big UI refresh. We also know more brands and services will be integrated with Google Pay so expected related announcements in the coming months.

If this method was not successful, it is believed the European Union could push for Google to make switching browsers and search engines easier for users. Google licenses its mobile operating system to smartphone and other device makers for free, with the goal of mass adoption compared to Apple's more premium approach.

"Nobody is forced to take Google's apps, but if you want to have certain apps you have to have the whole suite", said Jakob Kucharczyk, Google E.U representative. Especially with airline tickets, this dedicated view makes it easier to quickly pull up a boarding document.

Google Pay is fast, simple, and secure. It can be used on different devices and platforms. Bought something for another person or for a project? This was already doable via the separate Google Pay Send app, but it is now rolled in to the main Google Pay feature set. Ticketmaster is supported now and soon, those tickets from Eventbrite can be stored. You don't have to print tickets because you only need to show your phone.

Given Google's account base and the reality that most folks have one, Google Pay's peer-to-peer payment effort could garner momentum.
