Fossils of 'first giant' dinosaur discovered in Argentina

The Balde de Leyes site was first discovered in 2001 and started unearthing bone fragments in 2014

The researchers say the Ingentia prima, which loosely translates to "first giant", was a four-legged herbivore that grew cyclically, meaning it would grow quickly for stretches of time and then stop growing for similar stretches, kind of like a tree.

What is unexpected is Ingentia prima dates back to Triassic, 30 million years before the well-known very big Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus, which are thought to be the earliest giant dinosaurs, said Dr. Steve Brusatte of the University of Edinburgh.

Ingentia, known from two partial skeletons, was discovered in Argentina's San Juan Province.

"As soon as we found it, we realized it was something different".

'But with this discovery we can see the first steps toward gigantism occurred 30 million years before the giants dominated practically the entire planet'.

For the new study, lead scientist Cecilia Apaldetti and her team from the National University of San Juan analysed the fossil, along with three new specimens of a closely-related and previously documented dinosaur known as Lessemsaurus sauropoides (which was done for comparison).

Fellow co-author Ricardo Martinez believes the Ingenia prima is from "a Late Triassic period, possibly 205 million years" ago.

Dinosaurs first appeared around 230 million years ago, and it was believed to have taken them about 50 million years to become massive.

The plant eater, described in Nature Ecology & Evolution, is an ancestor of its famously freakish titanosaur cousins Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus, renowned for their enormous necks and tails.

The Triassic period extended from around 250-200 million years ago and the Jurassic from 200-145 million years ago.

The newly identified bus-size beast - named Ingentia prima, which means "first giant" in Latin - weighed up to 11 tons (10 metric tons) and measured up to 32 feet (10 meters) long. Later sauropodomorphs would grow at a steady rate.

These adaptations included such things as small skulls, long necks and tails, column-like legs, rapid bone growth, and pneumatic vertebrae, where air spaces exist within the bones to make them light (a trait that still exists in modern birds). At the end of the Triassic period it was a type of savannah.
