Federer's frosty response to Wimbledon, World Cup scheduling clash

Novak Djokovic is hoping to see a full court for the men’s final but the lure of football may be too much to resist

The current Wimbledon edition will stay in the history due to the coinciding of the men's singles final, that will start on Sunday at 2:00 PM, with the World Cup final, that takes place at 4:00 PM UK time.

The World Cup showpiece will take place on Sunday at 18:00 (local time), which is 16:00 BST, meaning it is likely to kick off during the men's grass-court final, which eight-time champion Federer is a heavy favourite to be a part of.

Club rules that all mobile phones and tablets should be switched off "in and around the courts of play" have been relaxed, however, with Lewis stating that they would only be enforced if they affected others.

But Wimbledon chief executive Richard Lewis has refused to change the championship's stance and said attending spectators were expecting to see tennis.

Fans on the grounds of the All-England Club watch the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Sweden on their cellphones.

I was out and about around the grounds and you could tell when England had scored and it was lovely, it was wonderful. Lewis said: "Our attitude is if people aren't affecting other people's enjoyment of the tennis, which they weren't, because they've got it on silent or whatever, or they are listening with an earphone, or whatever, that's fine".

Said Lewis: "We want people to be able to enjoy in this modern era the fact that this is a tennis event but that there is something else very special going on".

"I gather it wasn't very successful because it did interrupt people's enjoyment of the tennis and what we did last Saturday actually did work very well", added Lewis.

He also told BBC Sport that Wimbledon's big TV screen on "Henman Hill" was reserved for tennis.

"The (football) players are going to look up in the crowd and not understand what's going on at Wimbledon".
