Erdogan sacks 18,000 officials before inauguration

Some 18,632 people have been sacked including 8,998 police officers 3,077 army soldiers

A total of 18,632 Turkish state employees have been dismissed from their posts by a statutory decree under Turkey's state of emergency over their links with terror groups, according to the official gazette Sunday.

Turkey regularly carries out such operations as part of a large-scale government crackdown on Gulen's movement.

The move comes before Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday is sworn in as president following re-election in June and prior to lifting a state of emergency in place since summer 2016.

There will be a lavish ceremony before the new cabinet is announced.

With his re-election, Erdogan has gained more executive power over legislation and the judiciary thanks to constitutional changes voters approved past year. Erdogan has hinted it may be lifted.

More than 7,000 academics have been sacked since the aftermath of the failed coup in 2016.

The Turkish government has blamed USA -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen for the failed coup attempt during which 250 people were killed.

Also, 3,077 personnel from the Land Forces Command, 1,126 from the Naval Forces Command, and 1,949 from the Air Force Command were ousted from the Turkish Army.

Another 1,052 civil servants from the justice ministry and linked institutions have been fired as well as 649 from the gendarmerie and 192 from the coast guard.

However, his new powers enable him to "issue decrees with the force of law" and he "can still declare a similar state of emergency giving authorities powers to restrict basic rights and freedoms when deemed necessary", says Bloomberg.

"The (Gulen) organization is a religious structure in its basis, but the defendants on trial here are mostly people who've espoused a secular lifestyle", he said.

The detentions show no sign of slowing after hundreds of people, including soldiers, were taken into custody last week over alleged Gulen links.

Tens of thousands of others have been fired or suspended in the enormous purge.
