Anderson into Wimbledon semi finals

DJOKOVIC THROUGH Novak Djokovic, the three-time champion, showed Centre Court's capacity crowd a fair reflection of the player he was two summers ago.

But he found himself in even more unfamiliar territory with an inspired Anderson's relentless, thudding serve eventually overpowering the 20-time grand slam victor.

The setting was not the only thing alien to the defending champion.

Djokovic saved three break points in the fifth game of the third and made the Japanese star pay by breaking for 4-2 and an eventual two sets to one lead.

There's a sense of loss whenever Federer is beaten because he's so good to watch. But that turned out to be the least of his worries.

There was little sign of the drama which unfolded when Federer raced through the first set in 26 minutes.

Not Roger Federer, certainly not the 11,393 fans who had tickets for No 1 Court and probably not Kevin Anderson, who played the match of his life.

Australia' Glenn Maxwell explains why he didn't shake Sarfraz Ahmed's hand
Maxwell took to Twitter on Monday, explaining that the incident was nothing more than a "genuine oversight" on his part. The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman had his hand exchanged ready for a handshake but Maxwell appeared to ignore it.

That took great self-belief, he added, knowing that he had never taken a set off 20-time major victor Federer in four previous meetings. Even if Federer had managed to get past Anderson, as he nearly did, having held match point in the third set, there was no guarantee he would have gone on to win the title, especially with a rejuvenated Novak Djokovic in the other half of the draw, not to mention Rafael Nadal and Juan Martín del Potro.

When Anderson broke again in the fourth, Federer was suddenly on the ropes.

Deploying his huge serve to lethal effect, Anderson roared back to leave the champion's title bid in tatters thanks to a barrage of 28 aces and 65 winners.

Top seed Federer, 36, had not dropped a set on his way to the last eight.

From there, the tall and powerful Anderson kicked on whilst Federer stalled.

The decider went on serve deep into double figures, before Anderson broke in the decisive 23rd game to set up a chance to serve the match - a chance he duly took. That also was the closest he's come to winning a Grand Slam trophy, while Federer owns 20.

No. 1 Roger Federerr vs. "I just kept telling myself this will be my day". You need that mindset against Roger.

But Anderson was just getting started. He was, after all, the runner-up at last year's U.S. Open. "I probably won't have another 6-0 set this week, so I'll enjoy this one". He won the Australian Open for the sixth time earlier this year. "It just happened to be that today wasn't the day". I think his learning curves could be quicker but they have to be his.
