Family: Woman on oxygen dies after power cut off to her home

Ailing Woman On Oxygen Tank Dies When Electric Company Cuts Off Power In Her Home

Congestive heart failure struck in mid-April, and the Newark woman was waiting for the inevitable.

But the circumstances surrounding Daniels' death last week were not tied to her ailments alone, according to her family.

The power company contends that they did not have record of a medical condition that required Daniels' electricity to stay on.

At one point during the day, paramedics arrived at the home and provided Daniels with oxygen from a portable tank.

KMOV 4 reported that the power to Daniels' home was restored Friday morning, but noted that the grieving family still claims they don't understand why her service was interrupted. "She was horrified. We were all horrified". "She was gasping until the time she died". The reason for the New Jersey great-grandmother's death, per her family: PSE&G turned off her electricity due to an unpaid bill.

When the oxygen tank stopped running, they used a smaller reserve, and when that was empty, they called EMS, but it was too late.

Temperatures that day in Newark, where Daniels lived, were as high as 91.

In the hours between, family members rushed to cool down the failing patient.

Linda's daughter, Desiree was by her side that day. "But we couldn't pump the oxygen". Since May, the account owed around $1,800, according to ABC 7.

Ethiopian Tsgabu Grmay became the first rider to abandon the race, suffering with abdominal pain. Astana climber Luis Leon Sanchez later called it quits after he fell and bloodied his left arm.

Daniels' family, however, disputes her payments were behind to the point necessitating a shutdown. There was a delinquent balance on their account but they were trying to pay it down.

Daniels' son Sam says he is upset and angry.

"No warning, no shut-off notice or something in the mail".

Daniels' two children and granddaughter say they don't know why the utility company turned the power off.

"We made numerous calls", Washington told NJ.com. "We have a large family and everyone in our family was calling", Desiree said.

"We're saddened to hear that Ms. Daniels passed away yesterday".

New Jersey utility customers who have medical or financial issues can obtain help from a variety of sources, according to the Board of Public Utilities.

State regulations prohibit utility companies from cutting services for non-payment if a medical emergency exists. The family says they have not decided if they will seek legal action against the power company.

"We are reviewing our records to determine what transpired", Namiotka told NJ.com. "And she's a senior. And there are a lot of people like her". "PSEG said 'Oh, we're on our way.' Kept telling us that, but no one showed up". He did not give further details.
