Timehop security breach leaked names, email addresses - here's what you can do

A massive data breach on Timehop app has exposed the private details of more than 21 million people according to a new report. The service links to users social media accounts and claims to be'reinventing reminiscing by resurfacing old phot

Access tokens to your social media and online photo services.

Timehop says its has notified all its European users of the breach.

The good news is that it appears none of your social media posts or photos were obtained - the company deletes this data after you have viewed it. Timehops also says there is no evidence that the hackers gained access to any accounts. We learned of the breach while it was still in progress, and were able to interrupt it, but data was taken.

Timehop has already invalidated all the access tokens it had on file, effectively disconnecting every Timehop account from every service and preventing any more harm being done.

Timehop says that not all users had an email address or phone number attached to their account.

The groundwork for the attack was started back in mid-December when an unauthorized person used an authorized user's credentials to create a new administrative user account that could access Timehop's Cloud Computing Environment. However, Timehop claims that the tokens were deauthorized and made invalid within a "short time window" and can not be used to gain access to users' social media profiles.

Timehop has disclosed a security breach that has compromised the personal data (names and emails) of 21 million users (essentially its entire user base).

Keys that let Timehop read and show you your social media posts (but not private messages) were also compromised.

Oil dips in nervous trading as US-China trade war looms
At the same time, exports from several OPEC producers, including Venezuela and Libya, have been falling. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 14 cents, or 0.2 percent, at $72.80.

"We have deactivated these keys so they can no longer be used by anyone", the company said.

"We have now taken steps that include multifactor authentication to secure our authorisation and access controls on all accounts", the blog post said. Furthermore, the company says it's communicating with local and federal law enforcement officials while working through everything.

Users were logged out of the app in order to reset all the keys.

As of now, Timehop claims that there is no evidence of the stolen data being used. It doesn't store data like credit card information, location data or users' IP addresses either.

Timehop's already completed an initial audit of the situation and is now in the process of a more thorough one to analyze all of its security measures.

According to its preliminary investigation of the incident, the attacker first accessed Timehop's cloud environment in December - using compromised admin credentials, and apparently conducting reconnaissance for a few days that month, and again for another day in March and one in June, before going on to launch the attack on July 4, during a U.S. holiday.

For now, by way of explanation, it writes: "There is no such thing as flawless when it comes to cyber security but we are committed to protecting user data".

Timehop has also provided a more detailed breakdown of the attack if you want to lean more about what happened.
