Rainy pattern continues for week ahead & latest on Beryl & Chris

This graphic from the National Hurricane Center shows the projected path of Tropical Storm Beryl on Sunday

Tropical Storm Chris continues to meander off the coast of North Carolina.

Tropical Storm Chris was about 160 miles (257 km) south of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina with top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (72 kph), the NHC said in an advisory.

As some East Coast residents gear up for Tropical Storm Chris, New Englanders can rest easy knowing the storm will avoid the area, forecasters said.

As Chris spins over relatively warm water it will gradually strengthen possibly becoming a hurricane late Monday evening or early Tuesday as it eventually heads to the NNE, staying away from land.

As Beryl approached, Puerto Rico, a USA territory, was still recovering from the devastation of Maria, which struck the island on September 20, 2017, as Category 4 hurricane with maximum wind speeds of 155 miles per hour.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Chris remained stationary and was not expected to move in the next few days.

No coastal watches or warnings were in place for Chris as of Sunday. It is 60 miles northeast of Martinique and 70 miles east-southeast of Dominica.

A tropical storm warning is up on Guadeloupe and Dominica, while a tropical storm watch has been issued for the French Caribbean territories of Martinique, St. Martin and St. Barts as well as St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Lucia, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Beryl is then expected to weaken, with its post-tropical remnants charting a course for Puerto Rico and following a somewhat similar path through the Caribbean as 2017's Hurricane Maria.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.

Tropical storm watches were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia and Dominica. It wasn't projected to directly threaten land over the next few days, though forecasters said it could kick up risky surf and rip tides.

Chances of formation are low, near zero percent within 48 hours and near 30 percent within five days.

National Weather Service meteorologist Carlos Anselmi told the AP that 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) of rain was expected across Puerto Rico, with double that in isolated areas. On average, the third storm forms August 13, said Phil Klotzbach, a tropical weather researcher at Colorado State University and Capital Weather Gang contributor.
