FDA: Parasites In Del Monte Vegetables Causing ‘Explosive’ Diarrhea

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

A week earlier the CDC's count was 185 cases. But the number of infections has grown since then, and the CDC is warning that more cases could still be reported, because the cyclosporiasis infection has a delayed onset for symptoms of roughly one week and can last for weeks.

This week's CDC update showed slightly stronger wording.

People who got illness range from ages 13 to 79 years old.

Officials say the Del Monte vegetable trays included broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and dill dip.

Multiple U.S. government agencies are investigating illnesses associated with hundreds of Del Monte vegetable trays sold in some states in the Midwest, officials said.

The recalled products have a "Best If Enjoyed By" date of June 17, 2018.

If he can get Kevin De Bruyne to play the way he did against Brazil, I think Belgium is the favorite to win this entire thing. On Tuesday, it will be Henry versus France and Henry versus Deschamps, his former teammate for both France and Juventus .

Consumers who have purchased the recalled items should not consume them and throw them away immediately.

The trays, which contain fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots and dill dip, were sold at Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, FoodMax and Peapod according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has not yet identified ingredients linked to the outbreak, saying only that each component is under investigation. The FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays, as well, in its ongoing investigation.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a single-celled protozoa most commonly transmitted on produce contaminated with human fecal matter, particularly from tropical or subtropical regions where the parasite is native.

The time between becoming infected and becoming sick is usually about 1 week.

Most people infected with Cyclospora develop diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements.
