Erdogan sworn in as Turkish president with sweeping new powers

Buhari congratulates Turkish leader Erdogan

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday took the oath of office as Turkey's first executive president.

After taking the oath, Erdogan plans to visit the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern, secular, Turkish Republic.

The presidential aide stated that Buhari in the telephone conversation with Erdogan said he looked forward to the strengthening of relations between Nigeria and Turkey.

Erdogan will face immediate and major challenges in his second term, posed by an imbalanced fast-growing economy and foreign policy tensions between the West and Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member.

Mr Erdogan has largely ruled by fiat since 2016, when he imposed a state of emergency on the country in response to a failed coup attempt against him.

Observers had speculated that the purge might ease after the elections, but on Sunday the government issued a decree dismissing 18,000 state employees including teachers, police and military officers over alleged links to terrorist groups. A special stamp will be printed to commemorate Erdogan's inauguration.

He will then head to more challenging encounters at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels where he will meet with United States counterpart Donald Trump.

The president will sit at the top of a vertical power structure marked by a slimmed-down government with 16 ministries instead of 26 and multiple bodies reporting to him.

Turkey put the new political system to a referendum in 20-17.

In one of the most significant changes, the European Union affairs ministry, set up in 2011 to oversee Turkey's faltering bid to join the bloc, will be subsumed into the foreign ministry.

The shift to a presidential system will replace the parliamentary system and eliminate the post of prime minister. Erdogan has prevailed in a dozen local, parliamentary and presidential elections.

No major Western leader featured on a list of 50 presidents, prime ministers and other high-ranking guests published by state news agency Anadolu.

The president said in the previous days that there will not be any members or parliamentarians of his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the new cabinet, hinting that it will be made up of former politicians and bureaucrats.

The most intense attention will focus on who will be responsible for foreign policy and the economy.

Starbucks eliminating plastic straws from all stores, introduces adult ‘sippy cup’
The announcement comes after Seattle, Starbucks' home market, banned restaurants from using plastic straws and utensils on July 1. Still, those who support limiting plastic straws say they are generally unnecessary and a ban is symbolically important.

With 5,000 food service providers in the area, Seattle is the first major city in the U.S.to enact such a ban, KIRO-TV reported. Plastic straws and utensils were originally exempt from the ban because of a lack of viable compostable alternatives.
