Trump Administration says it knows location of all children

U.S. Sen Marco Rubio speaks during a news conference with the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children behind him on Friday

A group of immigrant rights protesters has blocked a bus carrying immigrant children outside a U.S. -Mexico border processing facility. Extra law enforcement officials were called in to help control the scene and allow the bus to move out.

The fate of 2,300 children wrested from their parents at the US border with Mexico remained unclear on Friday two days after President Donald Trump ordered an end to migrant family separations, as he accused Democrats of spinning "phony" tales of suffering for electoral gain. Tensions demonstrably continue to grow, as Saturday a group of demonstrators took to the streets, stopping a bus near an immigration detention facility.

Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-Conn., said Border Patrol agents grappling with the issue at the facilities were "concerned and confused". "And ours is to show those kids that they have people here in the United States that care".

There were some 2,053 of those children as of Wednesday, when President Trump signed his executive order ending family separation at the border.

In recent weeks, more than 2,300 children were taken from their families under a "zero-tolerance" policy in which people entering the US illegally face prosecution.

But with more than 2,300 children already separated from families in May and early June, the ripple effects - for families, Congress and the White House - will likely continue to reverberate.

The administration says it will now seek to detain immigrant families during their immigration proceedings, which has also stoked an outcry.

"The United States government knows the location of all children in its custody and is working to reunite them with their families", the Health Department said in a statement.

In Florida, Argentine immigrant Maria Bilbao said she joined the protest because she came to the country 17 years ago with her then-9-year-old son and understands the fear of being separated from a child.

"You will have children in facilities that are entirely inappropriate for children and are not meeting child welfare standards", said Michelle Brane, director of the migrant rights and justice program at the Women's Refugee Commission.

"These have been really hard days", Chavez said. Everyone - even infants - is assigned "A" or alien numbers, only to be given different identification numbers by other federal agencies.

Speaking to reporters Saturday after visiting a Customs and Border Protection processing facility in the U.S-Mexico border city of McAllen, they described seeing children sleeping behind bars, on concrete floors and under emergency "mylar" heat-resistant blanks.

Goodwin said she has been inundated with requests from the parents, and the list is still growing. "We'll not rest until our border is secure, our citizens are safe and we finally end the immigration crisis once and for all", he said.

The policy, as originally articulated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, was viewed as a tool to discourage people coming up from dysfunctional countries in Central America to seek asylum at the US border with Mexico. About 9,000 such family units have been caught in each of the last three months, according to USA border authorities.

The White House announced plans in April to prosecute all immigrants caught along the southwest border with illegally entering the country.

How the government would reunite families has been unclear because the families are first stopped by Customs and Border Patrol, with children taken into custody by HHS and adults detained through Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In Friday's notice, ICE said the family detention beds should be in state-licensed facilities and allow freedom of movement for detainees, and should preferably be located in states along the southwest border.
