Melania wears 'I don't really care do u?' coat on migrant visit

UPDATE: First lady visits migrant children at Texas detention center

The First Lady's choice to don a khaki green Zara jacket that read "I really don't care, do u?" to board a plane headed to see immigrant children being detained at the USA border prompted a massive backlash.

Colbert quipped that perhaps the Trump administration, in an attempt to "try to humanize these child detention centers", made a decision to "send their most high-profile detainee, Melania Trump".

The report claimed that an angry Donald Trump interrogated his wife, who "played dumb" and claimed she just happened to grab the jacket (despite the fact that she was traveling to hot and humid Texas, where a long-sleeve jacket would be impractical). Indeed, nothing hidden about graffiti-style capital letters scrawled across her back, scoffed critics. When asked by ABC News why she wore the jacket and whether she was trying to send a message, the first lady's spokeswoman replied: "It's just a jacket".

In a few minutes, people started spoofing the jacket and adding their own messages.

One common reaction to the jacket was bafflement: What was she thinking?

Grisham was right. There was no hidden message.

"#SheCares #ItsJustAJacket" Grisham tweeted later on, as speculation swirled online.

The first lady wore a green, hooded military jacket from the fast-fashion brand Zara that read "I really don't care, do u?" both as she departed and returned to Washington.

Much Ado About Melania: US first lady does it her way
Melania Trump's East Wing team includes only 10 aides, compared with the 25 or so who worked under Michelle Obama and Laura Bush. "Thank you to Secretary Azar for traveling w me today & the care you are giving these children in such a hard time".

It was the most callous, pernicious article of clothing Melania has worn in public on perhaps the most important day of her career as first lady. It is holding 55 of the thousands of children under USA government supervision. "I thought 'Why don't we make the opposite jacket?".

"Now a lot of the clothes Melania wears sends the message "I really don't care", Colbert acknowledged. He posted: "I'm confused about Melania's jacket".

"She told him "I am headed down to Texas" and he was supportive".

Runways and store shelves have been filled in recent years with T-shirts bearing a number of messages: "We should all be feminists" T-shirts at Dior, "I am an immigrant" at Prabal Gurung, "People are people", at Christian Siriano. They all can't be that clueless.

Zara is a Spanish-based company with a large presence in the United States and around the world. It had no comment on the story.

Plenty of first ladies in the past have courted controversy - Hillary Clinton, Betty Ford, and at times Barbara Bush and Michelle Obama. The latest CNN poll put her favorability rating at 51 percent, down from 57 percent in a survey for the USA network conducted last month. She had changed into white sneakers by the time she and the president landed.
