Volvo will make fishing nets and bottles

Volvo Will Use Recycled Materials For 25 Percent Of Its Plastics By 2025

2025 every new auto will be a Volvo one-quarter consist of recycled plastic.

To promote its aim, Volvo followed the announcement by unveiling a specially-built XC60 built using recycled plastic components.

For example, the transmission tunnel console was made from renewable fibres and plastics, the carpets were made from plastic bottles and recycled cotton, and the seats also were made from plastic bottle fibres.

Those of you old enough to remember will know it's perfectly possible to make nearly anything in the world of Blue Peter from a Fairy Liquid bottle and a bit of sticky-backed plastic. In chairs of the crossover is also used a material in which there are fibers of plastic bottles.

"Volvo Cars is committed to minimizing its global environmental footprint", Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd, said in a statement.

Swedish manufacturer Volvo has made further commitments to a greener future by aiming to use more recycled materials in its vehicles.

It is also calling on suppliers in the automotive industry to work more closely with vehicle manufacturers to develop next-generation components that are "as sustainable as possible". "That is why we call on even more suppliers and new partners to join us in investing in recycled plastics and to help us realize our ambition". Some of the components in this model has been replaced with recycled plastic materials.

The XC60 was revealed at the Ocean Summit, a stopover in the Gothenburg Volvo Ocean Race created in partnership with the UN Environment Clean Seas campaign. Last month, Volvo Cars reinforced this strategy, by stating that it aims for fully electric cars to make up 50 per cent of its global sales by 2025.

In 2017, the company announced an industry-leading commitment to electrify all new Volvo cars launched after 2019. In January, it announced that the Skövde production site in Sweden had become carbon-neutral - something the brand hopes will be the case for all of its facilities by 2025.
