President Trump's immigration order sparks confusion, deep concern

US President Donald Trump

A member of a migrant family from Mexico, fleeing from violence, looks on while waiting to enter the United States to meet officers of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to apply for asylum at Paso del Norte worldwide border crossing bridge in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico June 20, 2018.

One migrant, known in the complaint by her initials M.G.U., said that she and her three sons aged 2, 6 and 13, fled Guatemala after her family faced death threats.

He said his order would not end the "zero-tolerance" policy that criminally prosecutes all adults caught crossing the border illegally.

The news in recent days has been dominated by searing images of children held in cages at border facilities, as well as audio recordings of young children crying for their parents - images that have sparked fury, question of morality and concern from Republicans about a negative impact on their races in November's midterm elections.

Tumlin and other advocates are also concerned for the fate of the children who have already been separated from their families.

The House of Representatives planned to vote on Thursday on two bills created to halt the practice of separating families and to address other immigration issues.

A separate case by the American Civil Liberties Union challenging family separations - but not the "zero tolerance" policy - argues that families have the right to remain unified.

The president on Wednesday signed an executive order that at least temporarily halts the practice of separating migrant families trying to cross the border illegally.

Theresa May breaks silence on child migrants saying Trump is 'wrong'
The possibility of Trump visiting the United Kingdom has been discussed since he took office in January 2017. Trump will be visiting Britain for the first time since becoming President on Friday 13 July.

After visiting Capitol Hill Tuesday night to rally a broad immigration bill, Trump said Wednesday he still hopes that Congress will act.

"Let's be clear that Trump is making a crisis of his own creation worse", said Karen Tumlin, director of legal strategy at the National Immigration Law Center, in a press call on Wednesday.

De Blasio told reporters the children at Harlem's Cayuga Center included a 9-year-old Honduran boy sent to the center 2,000 miles by bus after being detained at the border. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi but said they'll be forced to do a "real deal" on the border wall, "so easy", problem solved. It also instructs the Defense Department to provide or construct facilities to house the families.

"Of course we don't want families to be separated".

Under the order, the Homeland Security secretary will, with some exceptions, maintain custody of alien families while any legal proceedings concerning illegal entry or immigration status involving their members are pending implementation. The "court ordered loopholes" comment references a 1997 court decision that limits how long an immigrant child can be detained, which the Trump administration has cited as its rationale for separating families when parents are arrested.

Under previous administrations, families were often detained together, which is what Trump would like to see happen again with his new executive order.

The action came after a firestorm of protest from administration opponents and allies, reacting to pictures and sounds of young children traumatized by their separation from their parents at the hands of US authorities.

"I'm here to learn about your facility, in which I know you house children on a long-term basis, and also like to ask you how I can help these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible", she said.
