UN Rights Chief Blasts US Policy of Family Separation

In an effort spearheaded by a Northwest reverend, more than 600 United Methodist clergy members have filed charges within their church against Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Instead, the 640 Methodists charging Sessions, who include both clergy and lay members, have asked for a "reconciling process that will help this longtime member ... step back from his harmful actions and work to fix the damage he is now causing to immigrants, particularly families and children". Charges can be brought against anyone in the church, but a formal complaint against a layperson - non-clergy member - is rare. Sessions is charged with child abuse, immorality, racial discrimination in separating children from their parents. Sessions could be expelled from the denomination if found guilty by church authorities. The charging document is an acrid indictment of Sessions' time as attorney general and appears to pull very few punches.

"In 50 years of the United Methodist Church, I am not aware of any complaint against a lay person moving beyond that stage", Lawrence said.

As for the violation of doctrine charges, the Methodist group cites Sessions' alleged, "misuse of Romans 13 to indicate the necessity of obedience to secular law, which is in stark contrast to Disciplinary commitments to supporting freedom of conscience and resistance to unjust laws".

"I urge Israel to provide access to all human rights mechanisms - including the investigative body mandated last month - to enable impartial monitoring and advance accountability and justice", he said, speaking in the wake of hundreds of Palestinians being martyred and thousands wounded in the recent Great March of Return demonstrations.

"In the United States, I am deeply concerned by recently adopted policies which punish children for their parents' actions".

House immigration plan would allow families to be detained together
Amnesty International branded the action "nothing short of torture" and Apple's chief executive Tim Cook called it "inhumane". Lines of migrant children move through an immigration detention center in Texas.

A report by the United Methodist Church said some individual worshipers have reached out to Sessions' pastor.

"You saw the president (say) on camera that he wants this to end", she added.

Democrats are pushing to stop children from being separated from their parents while some Republicans say we have to be tight on people entering the USA illegally.

Doctors, religious leaders, the United Nations and politicians on both sides of the aisle have criticized the administration's use of family separations.

They also accused Sessions with "dissemination of doctrines contrary to the standards and doctrine of the United Methodist Church", in reference to Sessions' quoting a bible verse to defend the "zero tolerance" policy.

Administration officials have defended the tactic as necessary to secure the border and suggested it would act as a deterrent to illegal immigration, while Trump has sought to blame Democrats, saying their support for passage of a broader immigration bill would end the separations.
