Trump Administration Pulls US out of UN Human Rights Council

Russia calls out US ‘cynicism’ for rights council pullout

The Human Rights Council enables abuses by absolving wrongdoers through silence and falsely condemning those who have committed no offense.

She charged the USA with "stubbornly refusing to acknowledge the existence of serious human rights problems at home while at the same time trying to shape the council under its own interests".

The United States' current term on the council ends next year.

Russian Federation on Wednesday voiced surprise at the United States' decision to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council, accusing Washington of "gross cynicism" and "disregard" for the world body.

In a letter to at least 17 rights and aid groups, seen by Reuters, Haley berated them for urging countries not to support a US -drafted General Assembly resolution titled "Improving the Effectiveness of the Human Rights Council".

Bolton said the decision to withdraw was made by Trump "weeks ago" and followed a long review of the Human Rights Council's performance.

Diplomats from across the globe defended the United Nations Human Rights Council on Wednesday after the United States withdrew from a body it branded an anti-Israel "cesspool". She lambasted the council for "its chronic bias against Israel" and lamented the fact that its membership includes accused human rights abusers such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Washington's withdrawal is the latest US rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

That means the council will be left without one of its traditional defenders of human rights. The U.S., as at other United Nations organizations, is Israel's biggest defender.

Once he receives formal notification of the USA withdrawal, Suc said he would arrange for the American seat to be removed and work with the General Assembly to elect a replacement member. The United States has also quit the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO over accusations of anti-Israel bias. The U.S. joined the body only in 2009 under President Barack Obama.
