Russia On Verge Of World Cup Last 16 After Beating Egypt

THREE weeks and three days after Sergio Ramos twisted and slammed Egypt's best World Cup hope into the grass, Mohamed Salah returned.

Russian Federation scored three goals in a 15-minute span early in the second half to set up a 3-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday, moving the host nation to the brink of the World Cup's knockout stage.

Salah sat out Egypt's opener, Uruguay claiming a last-gasp 1-0 win, with Cuper rueing not being able to rely on the forward who scored 44 goals in all competitions in his first season for Liverpool.

Many have said that the situation is reminiscent of other instances where a delegation of celebrities was present ahead of an ill-fated game by the national football team; most notably the 2010 World Cup deciding-qualifier loss to Algeria in the Sudanese city of Omdurman.

Egypt face Saudi Arabia in their final group game on Monday but will need their next opponents to beat Uruguay tomorrow to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

This pours further misery on Salah after his tragic end to a sensational maiden campaign with Liverpool, having also been forced off midway through the first half of the Champions League final. Dan Ashby has the latest from the World Cup.

Salah missed Egypt's last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Uruguay but has been named in the starting line-up for tonight's clash against Russian Federation.

"When we talk about him being 100 percent fit, I have to go with my medical team, and with the player, who said he could play". I don't think majority expected, well certainly they didn't expect eight goals and two wins. "There was a lot of criticism against this ball but we can not change anything now", Igor Akinfeev, the goalkeeper and captain of the hosts, said as he sounded a more diplomatic tone to El Hadary, while decked out in his Adidas regalia pre-match.

"Today we'll have an important test for him to see how he does". You find out in 180 minutes very quickly which direction things are going to go.

Egypt is hoping for an improbable win for Saudi Arabia.

"Whether I should stay or not does not depend on me and we still have another match".
