Royal Ascot 2018: Meghan and Harry join the Queen in carriage procession

WATCH: Meghan's father gives first TV interview since royal wedding

Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Markle, was allegedly paid upwards of $60,000 to speak to a British morning show on Monday, according to a new report. Thomas also touched on Harry's views about Brexit, saying the Prince seemed "open to the experiment".

He told broadcaster ITV he had several phone conversations with Prince Harry, including one in which the Prince asked for permission to marry his daughter.

Her Majesty spoke about her fondness for Royal Ascot in her foreword for the official programme, stating: "My family and I greatly look forward to Royal Ascot".

In Thomas' chat, though, he heaped praise on Meghan, saying she's "a prize to [Harry], as well..."

Heart surgery the week before the May 19 wedding meant Mr Markle couldn't travel to walk his daughter down the aisle of St George's Chapel, Windsor. "She said, 'Of course we'll have to call him 'H" so no one knows that we are talking about Harry.

He spoke about how Meghan revealed the identity of her then-boyfriend over the phone, insisting they refer to Prince Harry as "H" to hide his identity. "She did cry", he said.

Talking about the moment he told his daughter and her husband-to-be that he would not make the wedding, Markle said, "They were disappointed".

He explained that it was meant to be "a way of improving my look", adding, "Obviously that all went to hell". And I feel bad about it. "I have my politics", Markle said.

"It might have been a treat for him as well because he didn't have a daughter".

Harry and Meghan have been particularly quiet since their wedding, with Meghan only a few days ago sharing her first public engagement with Queen Elizabeth in Cheshire.

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, was the only member of her family in attendance on the day.

At the end of the candid interview, the 73-year-old explained that he just wanted to set the record straight over negative stories written about him. Piers, for the record, wrote in the MailOnline that Thomas was paid a "relatively small fee", claiming the interview was more about "setting the record straight" than the money.
