Microsoft employees call on company to cancel contract with ICE

General view of Microsoft Corporation headquarters at Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris France

Amid the backlash against Microsoft on social media, one website developer, Mat Marquis, wrote on Twitter that he was ending his business with the company over its ICE contract.

"As the people who build the technologies that Microsoft profits from, we refuse to be complicit", the employees said in the letter, obtained by The Seattle Times.

Though Microsoft's post was from January, Microsoft only today was put under heavy fire.

"I want to be clear: Microsoft is not working with the US government on any projects related to separating children from their families at the border", he wrote.

The post in question appeared on the Azure blog, and in it Microsoft says: "ICE's decision to accelerate IT modernization using Azure Government will help them innovate faster while reducing the burden of legacy IT".

"We are providing the technical undergirding in support of an agency that is actively enforcing this inhumane policy", the letter read, saying the company's assurance Monday that it wasn't aware of specific ICE projects that involved separating families "does not go far enough".

McDonald's to ditch the plastic straw in favour of paper alternative
According to A Strawless Ocean , Americans use over 500 million plastic drinking straws a day. "Not everyone is a fan of the change".

Although Microsoft said it was "dismayed" by the forcible separations, the company has yet to provide details about its contract with U.S. immigration authorities, like how the facial-recognition tech is exactly being used. "The agency is now implementing transformative technologies for homeland security and public safety, and we're proud to support this work with our mission-critical cloud".

In its statement, Microsoft merely said the partnerships had nothing to do with separating children from their parents.

Other tech companies are also sounding off on the immigration policy.

"Family unification has been a fundamental tenant of American policy and law since the end of World War II", the company said.

Federal agencies involved with immigration have been under particularly heavy scrutiny recently as more aggressive policies have been implemented at the direction of the Trump administration, like confining kids in cages, separating kids from their families, and deporting parents before their kids have been released from confinement.

Meanwhile, the technology company Microsoft is facing threats of a boycott over its collaboration with ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. It also urged the Trump administration to change that policy.
