Merkel facing her ‘WORST CRISIS’ ever: Chancellor’s coalition on brink over migrants

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has become infuriated with Angela Merkel over EU migration policies

Domestic politics has held hostage great Germanic power, first with a general election, n with a very extensive formation of government and now, when it seemed that it was finally time to start walking, with a sharp internal crisis. Last week, prominent CSU member and German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer presented a plan to reject undocumented immigrants and migrants who have already applied for asylum elsewhere in the European Union at the German border. The CSU exists only in Bavaria, and the CDU in Germany's other 15 states. The CSU has governed Bavaria since 1957.

President Trump is digging in on a demonstrably false claim that the crime rate in Germany has risen as a result of refugees in that country, despite the fact that the government of Germany recently released data showing the exact opposite - that the crime rate has actually decreased in Germany to the lowest levels since 1992.

Merkel, the EU's longest-serving leader, welcomed Monday's compromise in a dispute that has threatened to unravel her new coalition, and said her Christian Democrat (CDU) party would decide how to proceed after the two-week deadline elapsed.

If Merkel chooses to replace Seehofer as interior minister, it could trigger a crisis and collapse her ruling coalition. Officials predict that Germany will miss its goal of cutting emissions by 2020 by a wide margin. "Has anyone been looking at the Crime taking place south of the border".

In evidence of that division, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said on Tuesday the CSU demand for internal border checks is unacceptable.

Most migrants attempting to reach Europe from Africa take the sea route from Libya to Italy, though previous year saw a spike in numbers departing from Morocco to Spain instead.

Driven in part by the civil war in Syria, the number of asylum seekers entering Germany began to rise sharply in 2013, when it reached nearly 110,000, and then soared after Merkel changed the policy in the summer of 2015.

The two leaders will also have to settle on how to turn the euro zone bailout fund into a European Monetary Fund and complete a banking union Germany says is conditional on clearing non-performing loans from balance sheets.

The attorney general argued that "if we build the wall, if we pass legislation to end the lawlessness, we won't face these bad choices".

Trump's criticism and Seehofer's insubordination might strengthen Merkel's hand and bring the European Union closer to a common policy on migration and refugees.

Soeder and the CSU's ambitious top lawmaker in Berlin, Alexander Dobrindt, have sounded even tougher than Seehofer lately in demanding immediate action on immigration.

On Tuesday, he doubled down by insisting that crime had climbed more than 10% since Germany allowed in more than a million asylum seekers starting in 2015. That route has since been closed under a 2016 deal Turkey-EU deal.

The two leaders agreed that that European Union should adopt a united approach to asylum-seekers.

Mr Macron also called for a "more efficient system of solidarity and responsibility" on registering and distributing asylum-seekers.

Macron agreed to the need for "a European response to the challenge of migration", saying Europe must have "more capacity" to monitor its external borders but also more "solidarity mechanisms both outside and inside our borders" faced with migrant arrivals.
