FBI's Peter Strzok Agrees to Appear Before Lawmakers

FBI agent who sent anti Trump texts offers to testify on Capitol Hill

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said Tuesday that a subpoena could soon be issued to anti-Trump FBI agent Peter Strzok.

His counsel also claimed the agent "wants the chance to clear his name and tell his story". "We'll stop it", Strzok replied. "In testimony on Capitol Hill Tuesday, Michael Horowitz, the DOJ inspector general, said Strzok's conduct was extremely serious, completely antithetical to the core values of the department", but said he found no evidence that Strzok's actions had influenced any major investigative decisions or the outcome of the case. Horowitz wasn't a political actor looking to "weaponize" anything; his report clearly shows that Horowitz has no confidence that Strzok and others were able to separate their politics from their work, and that is a very reasonable conclusion, especially with the curiously delayed release of the "we'll stop it" text. While anti-Trump texts between Strzok and Page were revealed months ago, Republicans zeroed in on an exchange first disclosed in the new report. Page and Strzok were romantically involved at the time and used their work phones to engage in long-running text discussions of various work, personal and political topics.

Horowitz's report said investigators did not have confidence that Strzok's bias did not play a role in his lack of action in the fall of 2016, when Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in NY discovered thousands of Hillary Clinton emails on aide Huma Abedin's husband Anthony Weiner's laptop.

Critics on the right have also drawn attention to Strzok's work at the beginning of special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

On a related note, Strzok is willing to testify before the House Judiciary Committee or any other congressional committee without immunity and would not invoke his Fifth Amendment rights in response to questions.

CBS News reporter Andy Triay reported similarly.

The inspector general referred his findings on Strzok to the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility, which recommends possible disciplinary measures.

"I was not talking about anything remotely classified and the inspector general didn't say that as well", Comey said.
