Amazon brings Alexa to hotels

Amazon’s Alexa is coming to Marriott hotel rooms

Alexa for Hospitality is available to hotels, vacation rentals, and other hospitality providers starting today, with Marriott International signed up to deploy the service across its hotel portfolio this summer.

Housed inside of an Echo device, Alexa for Hospitality is functionally identical to the Alexa used in homes, except tailored to a hotel's service options. So if you're planning to go somewhere later this year and you're just dying to make sure Alexa will be right there with you, well, now your hopes will be realized. Guests will find an Echo device in rooms at Marriott Hotels, Westin Hotels & Resorts, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, Aloft Hotels, and Autograph Collection Hotels.

Alexa for Hospitality marks Amazon's entry into hotels.

"Marriott has a long track record of innovating for our guests, and we're thrilled to be among the first to offer Alexa for Hospitality".

In the near future, Alexa for Hospitality will also enable guests to temporarily login to their room's Echo speaker for a more personalized experience, such as being able to play their own music from Spotify.

"Customers tell us they love how easy it is to get information, enjoy entertainment, and control connected devices by simply asking Alexa, and we want to offer those experiences everywhere customers want them", said Daniel Rausch, VP, for Smart Home Services at Amazon.

Hotels will be able to create custom Alexa skills, set default radio stations and add property contacts, among other features. This integration will be temporary, with the connection automatically cut once a guest checks out. With Alexa, guests will be able to access a bunch of different services. "For example, people use their phone to ask for directions, order products before you even know you need them or have translation easily available".

To make Alexa work great with large number of hotels, Amazon has designed Alexa for Hospitality to work with existing hotel technologies.

In addition to providing information like pool hours or fitness center locations, Amazon says the service can be configured by hospitality providers to allow guests to control and adjust in-room devices like lights, thermostats, blinds, and TVs.
