Interest in football soars across Russia after national team’s record victory – survey

Rostov-on-Don, Russia: The plane carrying Saudi Arabia´s World Cup team suffered a fire in one of its engines as the players flew to Rostov-on-Don for their next match, the Saudi football federation said Monday. The plane caught fire due to a "minor technical malfunction in an engine".

"Nothing threatened the safety of the passengers".

They are expected to struggle again on Wednesday, with Uruguay eyeing up a second win after securing a late 1-0 victory over Morocco in their first game.

Per the team, the plane was provided by the International Air Transport Association, which organizes transportation for teams in the Cup.

The team did not clarify at what point during the flight the fire broke out.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the federation was quick quick to reassure supporters that everyone on board was safe, with the Airbus A319 craft - which took off from St Petersburg - able to land at the local airport as planned.

"Of course, we were a bit frightened, but thank God", he added, laughing.
