Millennials Leave The Worst Tips, Survey Suggests

Millennials said to be worst tippers: survey

Hot tip for millennials: Tip your waitstaff.

Millennials are the worst tippers of any age category, a new study by CreditCards.com revealed over the weekend.

When given an array of tipping options, such as one might find at a coffee shop, food truck or in a taxi or ride-hailing service, about one in six millennials said they regularly pick the lowest figure, and almost one in five select no tip. "So in some ways, it seems a bit self-defeating".

And almost one in three millennials say they leave less than a 15 percent tip at restaurants. While just more than half (51%) of adults aged 38 and older tipped at least 20% when dining out, only about one-third (36%) of millennial respondents said they did the same. "It's across the board", Schulz said.

But, he explains, "the younger people, they don't tip so good". "But beyond that, you need to tip - because these folks' livelihoods depend on it". Men, southerners, westerners, parents with young children, lower earners and the less educated said they tip less in restaurants than the overall median of 18 per cent, according to the study.

"Tipping at sit-down restaurants has always been the standard in the USA, but that's not necessarily the case in other countries", Schulz said.

Google Maps just evicted Uber bookings
We haven't seen confirmation of Uber's removal from Google, so we don't know the reasoning behind it or exactly when it happened. Have a low-end phone or tiny data cap? The feature was available for a little over a year, going live back in January of 2017.

Waiters and waitresses serving younger adults beware: you may not receive a big tip - or, in some cases, any at all. Meanwhile, 23 percent said they usually opted for 15 percent, 17 percent gave less than that, and 6 percent said they typically left no tip.

The study of 1,000 people aged 18 years and older was conducted between May 18-20 of this year.

The Emily Post Institute calls tipping "one of the most stressful and confusing aspects of etiquette today". Lots of quasi-restaurants: coffee shops, poke bars, places that leave out a tip jar create an atmosphere that implies tipping is optional. As for home delivery, go with 10 to 15 percent, or $2 to $5 for pizza "depending on the size of the order and difficulty of delivery".

About 45 percent of the childless tip 20 percent, on average, compared to less than 34 percent of moms and dads. Gen-Xers, baby boomers and the oldest Americans, the so-called Silent Generation, are more generous, leaving between 18 and 20 per cent.

While tipping can be an awkward situation to navigate, Schulz said, "be generous" when in doubt. It's about being able to provide for their families and put food on their own tables'.

Millennials have at least shown generosity in other ways.
