At least five people were wounded in a shooting in the southern city of Malmo on Monday evening, Swedish police said. According to local media, the attack took place in the downtown Drottninggatan area.

A brief statement by police added there is no cause for public alarm.

No arrests had been made, and police said there were no signs the incident was related to terrorism.

Witnesses told newspaper Aftonbladet they heard what sounded like 15 to 20 shots about 6:15pm in the city centre.

Swedish police said the motive for the attack is not yet known. Investigators suggest that automatic weapons were used, and are searching for a dark auto that was seen leaving the scene at high speed, Aftonbladet reports.

"Things move fast when criminal networks start shooting each other".
