Video game companies dispute ‘gaming disorder’ addiction definition

Gaming Addiction Is Now An Official Mental Health Disorder

The World Health Organization says they now should be on guard for a danger in the real world: spending too much time playing.

Dr. Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO's department for mental health and substance abuse, said the agency accepted the proposal that gaming disorder should be listed as a new problem based on scientific evidence, in addition to "the need and the demand for treatment in many parts of the world".

A major venture for the World Health Organization is creating and maintaining the International Classification of Diseases, which is a grading system that assists in identifying a wide range of signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, and much more. The pattern of gaming behavior may be continuous or episodic and recurrent.

To get a proper diagnosis, the ICD description states that the behavior and features should be evident over a period of one year, however, can be shortened if 'all the requirements are met, or if symptoms are severe'. The pattern of gaming is often persists in spite of awareness of increased risk of harm to the individual or to others.

In its latest revision to an worldwide disease classification manual, the United Nations health agency said Monday that classifying "gaming disorder" as a separate condition will "serve a public health objective for countries to be better prepared to identify this issue".

Obviously games companies have a vested interest in not equating video games with drink, drugs, and gambling but they are right in that there is both a lack of consensus and detailed study into the issue.

It's also worth mentioning that even with this definition, diagnosis standards are quite high.

Online and offline "gaming disorder" is grouped with "disorders due to substance use or addictive behaviours" in the ICD's 11th edition, the first major revision in almost three decades. "We understand that our industry and supporters around the world will continue raising their voices in opposition to this move and urge the WHO to avoid taking steps that would have unjustified implications for national health systems across the world". The manual's last revision occurred way back in 1992, and it desperately needs fixes to benefit today's medical professionals.
