Phil Mickelson has moment of madness at US Open

See Phil Mickelson's bizarre meltdown on the green at the U.S. Open

He shot 81 for the round. It's certainly not meant that way. I wanted to get to the next hole and I didn't see that happening at the time without the two shots.

Mickelson jogged after the ball after it curled around the hole, realizing it was about to head down the other side of the green.

Mike Davis, the USGA CEO, said Saturday night that Mickelson called him to ask if he should have been disqualified, to which Davis replied no. Davis said that Mickelson implied that he was considering withdrawing. But I know it's a two-shot penalty, hitting a moving ball.

"That's different than if he had deliberately just stopped the ball or whacked it in another direction or something like that". But it also could have resulted in a disqualification, something that the rules committee of the U.S. Golf Association chose not to consider.

It's another chapter in the saga of Mickelson at the US Open - the only major tournament missing from Mickelson's resume and one in which he's finished runner-up six times. But he praised the setup earlier this week and said again Saturday that it was tough and "everyone has to play it".

That came after Mickelson's "moment of madness", as Saturday playing partner Andrew Johnston described it, became not only the talk of the tournament, but of the entire sports world and beyond. "But I'm in a decent position", he said after dropping back to five over overall. "If I was a player behind him, I'd be annoyed", he said.

Mickelson could say more, plenty more. "I've never seen anything like that from a world-class player in my life". It's something you might see on your home course with your mates.

However, no changes in system settings or run demanding applications that could run in the background, it was not made. Apple's latest guidelines to developers restrict apps about how they handle user information on the Apple store.

I can't believe what I just saw Phil Mickelson do at the U.S. Open.

"But it's nothing disrespectful to me or to the U.S. Open or anything".

Whether some of the fans knew of the mishap or not, there were number of them looking for autographs once Mickelson did his interviews, both for Fox and the throng of reporters just outside the clubhouse.

Phil Mickelson sinks his put in his return to the 13th on the final round. "I don't know what it is with this golf course".

"The ball was going to go off in a bad spot", he said. He acknowledged the ball would have rolled off the green and rather than try his luck from there, he took the 2-stroke penalty and moved on. It's my understanding of the rules. "This is the first time I got a taste of the final group, and coming down the stretch, having a chance to try and catch [winner] Brooks [Koepka] and it was a lot of fun for me". "I just finally did".

According to ESPN, that matched his worst score on a U.S. Open hole as a professional and set a career record for worst score relative to par at the U.S. Open as a pro. "Lefty" finished his third round 11-over par 70 to finish the day 17-over and will once again miss out on winning a U.S. Open.
