A 5.3-magnitude natural disaster, centered in the summit region of the volcano, hit the island on Friday.

An quake struck the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday morning. Friday's 5.3 quake was not powerful enough to generate a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

This comes as thick vog, or volcanic smog, continues to surround the southern area of the island, and is expected to move into Kona through the weekend. Limit outside activities and if you have breathing problems please stay indoors.

A new video is surfacing from the Hawaii National Guard showing a river of lava on the Big Island.

An alert issued Thursday evening said the activity from the volcano hadn't changed much and that Fissure 8 was still producing a "large channelized flow" spreading all the way to the ocean.

According to the US Geological Survey, one day earlier on June 15, the lava had reached heights between 100 and 130 feet, and was flowing from the fissure into sea at Kapoho.

Fissures 16 and 18 also continued to ooze lava.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said a small explosion occurred at 3:19 a.m. and produced a lava plume which rose 6,000 feet above sea level.

Gov. David Ige said Trump approved the request for individual assistance on Thursday.

The aid will provide residents with shelter, unemployment, trauma, and legal assistance.
