Volvo’s New S60 to Get the Polestar Engineered Treatment

Polestar Engineered upgrade to be offered on top-spec Volvo '60 series' T8 models

All Volvo models will be available with electrified powertrains by 2019, and the new S60 will be available with the T8 supercharged, turbocharged, plug-in electric 2.0-liter I-4.

According to Volvo, S60 models that receive the Polestar Engineered treatment are positioned above its R-Design versions.

However, judging by the recent release of the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered, it might be more accurate to say that "electrification" is the future of Volvo. Like that vehicle, these high-spec "60 series" models will incorporate Polestar's new aesthetic trademarks, such as gold-painted brake calipers, Brembo monoblock units in this case.

The announcement comes shortly before the Swedish automaker is expected to unveil its new S60 sedan, which will be built in Charleston, South Carolina. The changes encompass upgrades to the suspension, brakes and engine management system.

Polestar Engineered is the new confluence of Volvo and Polestar.

The Polestar Engineered packages transforms wheels, brakes, suspension and the car's engine ECU. The software upgrades improve fuel consumption and emissions-neutral performance, and refines the automatic gear selection.

The shocks are borrowed from the Polestar 1 hybrid performance vehicle, meaning they are adjustable.

Large Brembo brakes with gold-painted, six-piston calipers sit behind Polestar Engineered-specific, lightweight wheels. But these new Polestar Engineered models are just the first step in Volvo one day finally rivalling brands such as BMW M and AMG, as full-fat Polestar models will likely hit even harder on the electrified sports auto drum.

That Twin Engine T8 powertrain, remember, is a hybrid electric.

Henrik Green, senior vice-president of research and development at Volvo, said that the parts have been "fine-tuned to work together, delivering a responsive and exciting driver's car".
