UK Justice Minister Resigns Amid May’s Brexit War with MPs

Brexit news UK EU Theresa May second referendum

"I'll vote for the EEA amendment because we need to keep our options open", he told lawmakers.

Theresa May's Brexit truce risked being unravelled as Remainers indicated she faced a future rebellion if a compromise is not reached on the role of MPs in the divorce settlement.

Before the vote, May held talks with more than 14 Tory rebels in her Commons office that lasted 11 hours, giving them personal assurances that she would agree to the broad thrust of their proposals.

Lawmakers supported the government's position to reject amendments to the EU withdrawal bill that challenged May's commitment to leave the bloc's customs union and single market, leaving the overall shape of her Brexit strategy intact that will transform Britain's trading relationships for decades.

Theresa May has seen off a potential defeat over her flagship Brexit bill, after last-minute concessions which could give MPs a bigger say on the final withdrawal agreement and make a "no-deal" exit much less likely.

"We are walking on a tightrope at the moment, we campaigned for remain but many of our MPs, including myself, now represent seats which voted heavily leave", John McDonnell, the party's economy spokesman and Corbyn's right-hand man said at an event in London on Wednesday.

Ministers saw off a move to give MPs the decisive say on what happens over Brexit if they do not agree with the deal negotiated by the United Kingdom government. The change reduces the likelihood that Britain could leave the European Union without a deal if it does not like the divorce terms.

Tory MP Mr Grieve later confirmed he would rebel against the Government by supporting the Lords EEA amendment, telling the Commons: "There becomes a point when you have to stand up and be counted, and if it's not this week it has to be next week".

This amendment had looked unsafe for the prime minister.

The Bracknell MP, who called for a second referendum on whatever deal Mrs May secures from the European Union, later told the Commons there was growing evidence that the Government's Brexit policy is "detrimental to the people we were elected to serve".

No government would survive if it tried to dispense with Parliament's input, he said. However, other bills on trade and customs are due to come before the House of Commons in the next few weeks, and rebels are preparing to challenge May's plans again.

Under a suggested compromise offered by former Tory cabinet minister Dominic Grieve, who has warned a no-deal scenario could lead to a "national crisis", ministers would have seven days to set out a fresh approach if Parliament rejected a deal.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The Lords themselves would get chance to consider a motion, but that wouldn't mean a binding "yes" or "no" vote for them. However, the party is divided on the issue, with a total of 89 Labour MPs choosing to defy Corbyn.

Laura Smith, the MP for Crewe and Nantwich, quit her job as shadow defence minister to vote against the EEA while Ged Killen, Tonia Antoniazzi, Anna McMorrin, Ellie Reeves and Rosie Duffield stepped down as parliamentary private secretaries to vote for it.

But the rebels were split, with 74 voting in favour of the Lords amendment, which called for the Government to pursue the so-called "Norway Model" membership, and 15 against it.
