The World Seems To Feel Safer After Trump-Kim Summit

The 13 most bonkers moments from the Trump Kim summit. No you’re not hallucinating

Whether Trump's claim that Kim is devoted to the process remains to be seen. The US nuclear arsenal, at some 4,000 weapons, is vast compared to North Korea's, which has fewer than 10 and may not have the missiles to lob them quite as far as it wants to.

South Koreans watch a TV screen displaying a broadcast of the historic meeting between President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore, at a station in Seoul, South Korea, June 12, 2018.

It is clear what Kim achieved. He also said that he and Kim had discussed human rights during their meeting - though no mention of those violations, or any concessions on them showed up in the final agreement.

Trump has said repeatedly that Tuesday's summit was only the start of a process and that the US would not ease up pressure on the North - including a crippling sanctions regime - until its goal of North Korea's "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" is reached.

At a solo press conference hours after the signing, Trump spelled out what kind of security guarantees he was talking about.

The joint statement issued in Singapore was vague. He said the United States is working on the issue with South Korea, and Japan-as well as with China, but "to a lesser extent". Trump described the drills as "provocative" and "inappropriate".

But North Korea's confidence began to show nearly as soon as Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday. "This person is not a wise representative for the U.S". "It's possible. We're dealing at a high level, a lot of things can change a lot of things are possible", Trump told him.

Still, he left open the possibility of restarting the exercises should denuclearization talks with North Korea stall. Murphy, have been quick to point out that no long-term verification process was included in the agreement.

Nice and handsome and thin and perfect

'You have South Korea, you have China, and they own the land in the middle.

When President Bill Clinton struck a landmark deal with North Korea in 1994, the isolated nation agreed to take a variety of specific steps that included freezing and later dismantling its nuclear program, as well as opening its facilities to worldwide inspectors. You know, we did sanctions and all the things you would do but I think without the rhetoric, you know, other administrations, I don't want to get specific on that, but you know they had a policy of silence.

Kim Jong Un, in a photo released by North Korea in November 2017. In their joint statement, the two leaders promised to "build a lasting and stable peace regime" on the Korean Peninsula.

The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. Think of it from a real estate perspective. Ahead of the meeting Trump had predicted the two men might strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean War in the course of a single meeting or over several days. But before the summit officially began, the White House announced Monday that Trump planned to leave Singapore on Tuesday night, saying nuclear talks with North Korea were moving "more quickly than expected". When asked if he would know if such discussions were planned, he said, "Yeah, I sure would".

Reporters first got a look at this absolutely batshit 4-minute video when it was played just before Trump emerged after the Singapore summit to answer questions.

"Featuring President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un in a meeting to remake history", the narrator concluded, as Korean words flashed on a black background: "It is going to become a reality?"

Tuesday was the latest reminder that in just 16 months, U.S. - and global - politics have been turned upside down.
