Russian MP warns against sex with foreigners during World Cup

Senior Russian lawmaker Tamara Pletnyova, a member of the Communist Party, has advised local women not to have sex with foreign men during the Russia 2018 World Cup. "I know that the children suffer as well, and then they are abandoned and stay here with the mother".

She warns that even if these women plan on marrying their foreign baby daddy, their child could end up stuck in another country with no means of getting back to Russian Federation.

She said women who had babies with foreigners around the time of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow often "suffered" as single mothers.

Tamara Pletnyova, head of the family, women and children's affairs committee, argued that even if these relationships led to marriage, women or their children would inevitably be taken overseas by the man. We should bear our own children.

In a quote translated by the Moscow Times, Pletnyova said: "It is one thing if the parents are of the same race; quite another if they are of different races".

The term was used during the Soviet era to describe non-white children conceived at global events after relationships between Russian women and men from Africa, Latin America, or Asia. "I'm not a nationalist, but all the same".

She said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother;" or, alternatively, being taken overseas by their fathers, urging women to marry "Russian citizens". "Then they come to me in the committee, these crying girls, because the child has been shipped away, taken and so on".

In comments to Govorit Moskva radio station, Alexander Sherin also said Russians should be careful in their interactions with foreigners as they might try to circulate banned substances at the tournament.

'I would have liked people in our country marry for love, regardless of nationality'. "I hope not", she said.

However, her comments drew both criticism and ridicule.

The 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation kicks off Thursday, and while most of us will be focused on cheering for our favorite teams, local women are being advised to keep something else in mind: don't have sex with foreigners.

Pletneva previously criticised the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment, tentatively spreading in Russian Federation. "If a woman doesn't want it, no one is going to harass her", she told Gazeta.ru news site in February.
