Pompeo: U.S. aims for 'major' North Korea disarmament in 2.5 years

A day after his historic nuclear summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jon Un in Singapore, Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday saying the meeting was a "very positive experience" and "everyone can feel much safer than the day I took office".

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document", Kim said through a translator.

Pompeo also cautioned that the US would resume "war games" with close ally South Korea if the North stops negotiating in good faith.

The meeting between the two world leaders in Singapore culminated in an agreement that commits the U.S.to offering unspecified "security guarantees" for North Korea in exchange for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

And now here we are, talking seriously about not-nuking each other.

KCNA said the two leaders "gladly accepted each other's invitation, convinced that it would serve as another important occasion for improved" relations between their countries.

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearization would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearization before USA sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed. Now, we're going to see. "History is a record of people who take action and rise to a challenge", he said.

"Obviously it is something that North Korea has complained about for a long time".

And Kim's media machine told the North Korean public how Mr Trump has reciprocated the offer of Kim visiting the USA in a state visit. "When Trump realized there wasn't going to be anything substantial in return, it was impossible for him to back out because he had already gone too far".

US officials said it was unclear what types of training involving USA and South Korean troops might cross into Trump's now forbidden zone of "war games". Absolutely. you used the term major, major disarmament, something like that?

Almost an hour later, noted the "fortune" the USA will save as a result of his commitment to end U.S.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Seoul, said the United States hoped for "major disarmament" of North Korea by the end of 2020. The source said that, if anything, it's something that came from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has been very vocal about it and has had direct conversations with Trump about the matter. Trump is also wrong to say there was an assumption before he took office that the United States would go to war. He said South Korea is still trying to figure out the exact meaning and intent of Trump's comments.

But while Trump also voiced a desire to eventually bring back US troops, he told Baier that the U.S.

Joel Wit, a Stimson Center senior fellow and North Korea expert, told NPR that in such a timeline "you could probably disarm key portions of the North Korea nuclear program".

"Trump wanted to make it look like he did something big, whether he did something big or not".

Trump first announced there would be "a signing" shortly after midday, during a stroll with Kim around the hotel grounds.

Both leaders signed a document pledging to work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" on Tuesday. "He's an incredible guy", Trump said.

Trump acknowledged to Stephanopoulos that the path ahead remained foggy. Trump will likely benefit politically from that sense of relief. According to the reviews, Trump didn't get much, including what he'd asked for.
