New York attorney general sues Trump Foundation

Donald Trump'broke law by using charity money to decorate his golf club

The New York attorney general on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump, his children and the Donald J. Trump foundation, alleging his charity engaged in "illegal conduct", Reuters reports.

The lawsuit alleges that the foundation paid $100,000 to settle legal claims against Mr Trump's Mar-A-Lago resort, $158,000 to settle claims against one of his gold clubs, and $10,000 to purchase a painting of Mr Trump to hang at another of his gold clubs. "I won't settle this case!".

Trump's children were also named as defendants in the attorney general's petition, filed with the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Also named in the suit were Mr Trump's two sons, Eric and Donald Jr.

She asked that its remaining $1 million in assets be distributed to other charities and that Trump be forced to pay at least $2.8 million in restitution and penalties.

Barbara Underwood said the foundation had engaged in "extensive unlawful political coordination" created to influence the 2016 election.

Trump Foundation "was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their goal or legality", Democratic Attorney General Barbara Underwood said as she sued to dissolve the foundation and seek $2.8 million in restitution. Underwood said she has sent letters to the Internal Revenue Service and Federal Election Commission for further investigation. Allegations of misdeeds connected to the Trump Foundation had swirled during the 2016 presidential elections, but the topic had been overshadowed during the early days of the Trump presidency. But the foundation could not legally dissolve while it was under investigation, the NY attorney general ruled.
