Musk's Boring Company wins bid to build high-speed system in Chicago

The Boring Company's new O'Hare Airport Station

"We have a person in Elon Musk who started an electric auto company from nothing, and started a space company from nothing, and he has proven that he doesn't like to fail", Emanuel said.

The plan for the "Chicago Express Loop, " announced early Thursday by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Musk's tunneling firm, calls for the construction of an underground tunnel with concrete tracks on which "skates" - individual vehicles built on a modified Tesla X chassis - would carry 8 to 16 passengers at between 125 to 150 miles per hour from one of the world's busiest airports underneath some of the country's most congested roads. It'll be called The Chicago Express Loop.

The company won the bid to build a high-speed express train to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, reports Bloomberg.

A taxi ride from downtown Chicago to O'Hare today costs about $40, and can take more than hour in morning traffic.

The Boring Company is already working on a Loop transportation system in Los Angeles. That said, with his other companies, Musk has "been able to pursue and fulfill visions that others say are too hard", Mahmassani added. It is unknown when the project will go online, but the concept has made some headway in major USA cities.

According to the Boring Company's website, its service will cut the journey time to 12 minutes, which would be "three to four times faster than existing transportation systems" that serve the airport.

Rebel Wilson has Australian defamation payout slashed
Wilson said on Twitter the night before the judgment that she had won the case regardless of the damages awarded. Wilson's legal representatives were not immediately available for comment.

The Boring Company has estimated the cost of the project to be $1bn, which would be entirely funded by it in exchange for all revenue from the system's transit fees, advertising, branding and in-vehicle sales.

The Loop's exact line hasn't been determined yet, but it will consist of two parallel tunnels that run "straight northwest from downtown following public way alignments", according to the city's press release.

The electric pods would depart both O'Hare and Block 37 as frequently as every 30 seconds.

The company beat out a consortium that included Mott MacDonald, the civil engineering firm that designed a terminal at London's Heathrow Airport, and JLC Infrastructure, an infrastructure fund backed by former basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson, said the people, who declined to be identified because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. It received permits to start digging in Washington, DC, and in Los Angeles. The city is expected to announce the news as soon as Thursday, one person said.

But in Chicago, the city will assist The Boring Company with all necessary permits, and there does seem to be some political will to have such a tunnel built within the city, and relatively quickly.
