Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri claims he turned down the chance to succeed Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid before Julen Lopetegui was appointed at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, new Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui is desperate to sign Kante this summer.

Although Tuesday's surprise announcement has since backfired on Lopetegui who was then sent packing by Spain today (Wednesday) on the eve of the 2018 World Cup. I spoke with the president and it was right for me to stay at Juventus.

I said no to Real Madrid.

Allegri affirmed that he rejected the interest from Madrid out of respect for his current club: "I told [Perez] that I had given my word to Juventus that I would stay here and I wanted to respect what I had said".

Allegri also indicated that Real were not the only club to have made an approach amid speculation that Chelsea were targeting him as a potential replacement for ex-Juve manager Antonio Conte.

In four seasons at Juve, Allegri has reached two Champions League finals, losing both times, once to Barcelona and another time to Madrid. "I will look to continue the improvements that we began four years ago, alongside [Beppe] Marotta, [Fabio] Paratici, [Pavel] Nedved and the president".

Allegri says he is not closing the door on Higuaín's possible departure: "Juve is strong enough to accommodate those who want to leave. Let's just see what happens after the World Cup".
