Soon afterward she downloaded Fortnite, a popular survival game developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, reported Scottishpaper the Daily Record.

Thankfully, she is reportedly getting back on track with her schooling and sports. Once their 9-year-old daughter downloaded Fortnite, however, her grades in school began to suffer.

The Mirror reports a United Kingdom couple originally bought their daughter an Xbox in January, and it wasn't long before they noticed the girl was becoming obsessed with the game that has been downloaded millions of times around the world. "My husband saw her light on in the night and found her sitting on a urine-soaked cushion playing the game", Carol said. "She was so hooked to the game she wouldn't even go to the toilet." the father said.

'She is in therapy for the addiction after she became withdrawn, agitated and disturbed from playing up to ten hours a day - sometimes playing until dawn, wetting herself so she didn't have to leave the screen'.

According to MailOnline, parents have told of how children of a placid demeanour have become more aggressive, developing an obsession with guns and killing, after playing the game. A post on the school's website said: "We've heard some of our children, including in Year 3, are playing a game online called Fortnite. if your child is playing this game talk to them and make sure you know what they are doing".

Hit her father in the face when he tried to confiscate her Xbox gaming console.

One of the breaking points for the family reportedly came after the parents noticed that multiple charges were accumulating on their credit card.

Although the game is free to play, developers have raked in cash from in-game purchases as players try to boost their performance.

Child psychologists believe kids could develop mental health problems if they become too exposed to the game.

Battle Royale starts with 100 players who all jump from a plane onto a small island where they fight to the death until only one player is victorious.

Counsellor Steve Pope, who is treating the girl, told the paper that the game is a "gateway" into further addictions and gambling in later life.

And professional gamers are making up to £500,000 (NZ$953,000) a month from live-streaming their matches for addicted children to watch.

Recent cases highlighted the game's "addictive nature" and "the extent to which it quickly impacts behaviour", he added.
