BSF personnel killed in Pakistan Rangers firing in Samba

Pakistan violated ceasefire in Keri and Digwar areas of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu: BSF personnel raised anti-Pakistan slogans on Wednesday while paying tributes to four of their colleagues killed in firing by Pakistani troops along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir last night.

All the martyred and injured jawans belonged to the 62 battalion of BSF.

Martyred jawans have been identified as assistant commandant Jatinder Singh, assistant sub-inspector Ram Niwas, sepoy Hans Raj and Sub Inspector Rajneesh.

The BSF ADG said that it was very unfortunate and "the ceasefire announcement made and agreed is to be honoured".

The younger of Sharif brothers said the Singapore Summit should set a good precedent for Pakistan and India to follow. "One jawan has been injured", said a BSF officer of Jammu Frontier.

BSF officials said that Pak Rangers first attacked a patrol party with cross border firing in which a few BSF men were injured and when a rescue team was sent to evacuate them Pakistan fired mortars in a lethal attack on the rescuers. Tension has again gripped the International Border after a brief lull.

The 1990 born Constable Hansraj Gurjar joined BSF in 2011 hailed from Alwar in Rajasthan and Assitant Sub Inspector Ramniwas, who was born in 1966 and joined BSF in 1988 also hailed from Sikar Rajasthan. "We have to remain alert 24x7 on the borders", said a BSF official.

This is the second major ceasefire violation along the IB this month and came despite Director General Military Operations (DGMO) of the two countries agreeing on May 29 to implement the ceasefire pact of 2003 in "letter and spirit".

With the death of the four BSF men, Pakistan Rangers have killed 19 people and injured 67 others besides displacing over a lakh people from the border areas of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts since May 15.

Rising incidents of attacks on security forces with grenades during the Centre's unilateral ceasefire during Ramzan is causing concern ahead of the Amarnath pilgrimage starting on 28 June.

The latest casualties take the number of those killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the IB and the Line of Control (LoC) this year to 51, including 25 security personnel.

A similar truce was agreed upon on May 21, after a wave of ceasefire violations left two BSF jawans and four civilians dead.

BSF immediately swung into action and retaliated in equal measure to silence Pakistani guns.

The BSF-Pak Rangers Sector Commander level meeting was held on worldwide border opposite the Border Outpost Octroi on June 5.
