After winning Brexit compromise, U.K.'s pro-EU rebels fear betrayal

He said: "I understand the difficulties MPs representing constituencies which voted strongly for Leave or Remain have on the EEA amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill".

Six Labour MPs resigned from senior roles in the party to defy Jeremy Corbyn on the single market vote, illustrating how it isn't just the Conservatives that are split over the Brexit question. "I'll vote for the EEA amendment because we need to keep our options open", he told lawmakers.

The votes tonight followed a dramatic day of politics in Westminster on Tuesday, when Prime Minister May agreed in principle to give MPs greater power in the Brexit process in order to avoid a humiliating defeat.

They are rallying around an amendment giving the House of Commons power to send the government back to the negotiating table with Brussels if lawmakers don't like the terms of the Brexit deal struck with the EU.

There was little doubt the government would win on the customs union and single market, which some pro-EU lawmakers say is the only way for Britain to retain economically advantageous close ties with the bloc, with the opposition Labour Party also divided over future relations.

If she is defeated in the House of Commons, it will be yet another blow to a prime minister whose authority has been challenged several times since she lost the Conservative Party's majority in an ill-judged election a year ago.

Here are the key amendments which MPs voted on Wednesday evening. Other flashpoints in the parliamentary votes include proposals to keep Britain tightly aligned with the E.U.'s economy. But pro-EU Conservative lawmaker Heidi Allen said it was inevitable "we will have to come to a customs union agreement", even if it was given another label.

Prime Minister Theresa May isn't the only United Kingdom political leader with a party that's divided and increasingly belligerent over Europe. "It enables parliament to dictate to government its course of action in an global negotiation".

Dr Lee said his main objection to Government policy was over the "wish to limit Parliament's role in contributing to the final outcome" and signalled he would rebel on the issue in the Commons later.

In a few weeks, MPs will vote on another piece of Brexit-related legislation called the trade bill.

In response to the votes, Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable accused Labour of conspiring with the Conservatives to "wave through a hard Brexit".

"The Labour Party respects the outcome of the European Union referendum and does not support the EEA or Norway model as it is not the right for option for Britain". It was a measure of the division in the party that out of 257 Labour MPs, 90 ignored that instruction and voted.

Laura Smith, MP for Crewe and Nantwich, was among 15 Labour MPs who voted with Theresa May to reject the EEA amendment.

"That is why Labour governments have always addressed these problems by properly funding the NHS, by having a national minimum wage, investing in our schools and so on".

In a statement, Corbyn defended his decision to oppose the EEA vote, despite telling his MPs to abstain in parliament.
