Wetherspoons will stop selling Champagne

No Champagne before Brexit UK pub chain says

Brexit is set to change what you drink in a major booze shake-up on the high street.

Pub chain Wetherspoons will cut the number of EU-sourced drinks and replace them with British ones in the run up to Brexit.

Champagne and wheat beers produced in France and Germany will be replaced, and sparkling wines from the United Kingdom and Australia will be substituted for Champagne.

Sparkling wines from the United Kingdom and Australia will be substituted for champagne, while more United Kingdom wheat beers will be sold.

Sparkling wines from British producer Denbies will take the place of champagne, while the alcohol-free version of Adnams Ghost Ship will replace Germany's Erdinger alcohol-free beer.

Founder and vocal Brexit supporter Tim Martin said that the move to non-EU suppliers would help to make prices lower in the long run, if the United Kingdom ends tariffs once it has left the customs union.

More UK wheat beers will be sold in a switch which will affect all 880 Wetherspoon pubs from July 9.

"The EU's customs union is a protectionist system which is widely misunderstood", Martin said.

Except for being a common standard, USB-C has no other advantage over Lightning connector in a smartphone. Many flagship Android phones already use USB-C for charging, and have done so for a number of years.

Martin - a vocal eurosceptic - said the pub chain is reviewing all of its products in a company-wise reshuffle which could take up to two years, something he hopes will make the business "more competitive".

"It imposes tariffs on the 93% of the world that is not in the European Union, keeping prices high for United Kingdom consumers".

The drinks boss said it makes sense to invest in United Kingdom drinks products now because of the EU's "protectionist" tariff systems, which he claims are "widely misunderstood".

He said that he intends to find a replacement for prosecco from the United Kingdom or new world countries which include Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the US.

Moet & Chandon champagne will be replaced with sparkling wine from the United Kingdom, like Denbies Sparkling Whitedowns Brut, Whitedowns Rose Brut and Australia's Hardys Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay.

Wetherspoon will continue to serve Kopparberg cider from Sweden, which recently confirmed it will produce its cider in the United Kingdom post-brexit.

It will also sell fewer wheat beers from France and Germany, replacing them with those made by both United Kingdom and non-EU producers across its 880 pubs from Monday 9 July.

Wetherspoon's will continue to serve Kopparberg cider from Sweden.
