Splitting California Into 3 States Put on November Ballot

Proposal to split California into three states earns spot on ballot

After more than 150 years of failed partition proposals, California voters will finally go to the polls to decide whether they want to relinquish their monopoly of the Pacific coast and become three new states.

Now, the legendary Silicon Valley investor is making headway on a longtime and perhaps unrealistic effort to split California into three separate states: Northern California, California (new), and Southern California.

One of the many, many efforts to break up the state of California into smaller, more governable chunks has made it onto the November ballot.

The Bay Area would be part of a new Northern California state with a border that starts north of Monterey, runs east and north to the Nevada state line, and includes everything north to the OR border.

The bottom portion of the state, which would include San Diego and the eastern part of the state with Fresno, would become Southern California, according to a map by the Times.

California: This will be considered the new state which includes Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties. The next statewide general election is set to take place on November 6. If a majority of voters who cast ballots agree, the process would begin for the first division of an existing USA state since the creation of West Virginia in 1863. If passed, the measure would still need congressional approval to move forward.

It got more than the required number of signatures in Tuesday's primary.

This is the third time Draper has tried to get voters to weigh in on breaking up the most populous U.S. state. Three smaller states would change that equation, which could make a lot of Democrats just as nervous as the idea of four new senators would make Republicans nervous.

Critics of the initiative say having three Californias would actually diminish the power of Democrats. Each state, though different in size, would have roughly the same population, according to the proposal.

Last year, an effort dubbed Calexit sought to bring the question of whether California should secede from the USA to this year's ballot. "California government can do a better job addressing the real issues facing the state, but this measure is a massive distraction that will cause political chaos and greater inequality".
